Ingmar and Utgartha

For my figure illustration class, one of the large assignments this semester has been illustrating a children's story. For my story, I went for David and Goliath, except setting it in a kind of mythical Bronze-age Northern Europe. Here's what I've got so far:

Scene 1: Utgartha Challenges the Livonians
Ingmar and Utgartha Scene 1

Scene 2: Ingmar refuses King Berig's Armor
Ingmar and Utgartha - Scene 2

Scene 3: Ingmar battles Utgartha
Ingmar & Utgartha - Scene 3

All in all, I've been having a lot of fun with this project. I'll be sad to see it go, honestly.
But next week - the cover!

Montage/Book Cover

Dead Lands final

A finished piece (for school) that was for a montage project. It's a comic cover!
(If you've read much late-seventies Conan, you may recognize that FONT-OF-STONE that I used.)

Here's two of the later-stage roughs for it.

decompress by drawing these massive battles, just like when we were little kids. Drawing without direction or purpose (beyond having fun) is very freeing when you're in a program devoted to doing exactly the opposite of that. There are often other participants, but none of them have flickr accounts yet.

UPDATE!
Richard's got another one of these battles posted up on his photostream!

I think 2010 will be a good one. Here's some roughs for my new illustration class...

And some stuff I've been playing with lately. I've been attempting to tackle the challenge of digital inking - or at least attempting to do so - and a little bit of inkwash doodling to make sure I still got it.
